Special Needs Dentistry
Having a special needs child is an incredibly unique and blessed experience for parents and guardians. It’s not uncommon for special needs children to have problems coming to the dentist for routine care. This can make it difficult to maintain the health of their teeth and treat problems early on before they are allowed to get worse. Offering special needs dentistry is essential in caring for these children when they come into the office.
What is Special Needs Dentistry?
Special needs dentistry is specific to children and teens who have mental, behavioral and medical needs. A child who has a disability requires different care than one who is able to sit and lay back easily in a dental chair. Children with autism and other conditions need a calm, compassionate and understanding approach when having dental treatment administered. Our goal is to provide the care that is needed in a way that works for your child.

Why is Special Needs Dentistry so necessary?
Without routine dental treatment, your child will begin to experience oral problems that can cause pain and discomfort. Special needs children may not be able to express this pain and discomfort, making it more difficult to work with them at home. With routine exams and cleanings, we can help to detect problems before they are allowed to get worse. If treatment is needed, we offer nitrous oxide and other sedation options to make their time with us more comfortable.
What can you expect with Special Needs Dentistry?
Your child will be scheduled for a convenient appointment that works for you. They will be seated comfortably in our office where Dr. Priya can perform an exam. A cleaning can be done by one of our hygienists who is able to take breaks during treatment as needed. At each step of your child’s appointment, we explain what will be done and what your child can expect. We use kid-friendly terminology to make the visit more comfortable and less frightening for them. We welcome families of all kinds into our office so that we can help provide the care that is needed regardless of past experiences you might have had. We aim to promote healthier, happier smiles conveniently in our office.
If your child is special needs and requires a dental visit, call our office today and one of our helpful staff members can further assist you.
